# How many sheets of plasterboard do I need? A table by room size

A 3 × 4 m room (9.8 × 13.1 ft), 2.4 m high, with one door, has 44.09 m² of wall and ceiling to board and needs 48.5 m² of plasterboard with 10% extra for cuts: 17 boards of 1.2 m × 2.4 m (48.96 m²), with 0.46 m² left over. The walls alone are 32.09 m² and need 13 boards of 1.2 m × 2.4 m; the ceiling alone is 12 m² and needs 5 boards of 1.2 m × 2.4 m. The board size and the allowance are generic example figures, not a product’s, and the boards are counted by area, not from a cutting layout: use the size of the board you choose.

Each row is the planner’s answer for that room, worked out when this page was built. The link at the end of a row opens the planner with that room filled in, to change the measurements and the product figures.

The boards are counted by area: the area to board, plus 10% for cuts, divided by the area of one board and rounded up. It is not a cutting layout, so check awkward shapes before buying. [How many sheets of plasterboard do I need?](https://buildbatch.co.uk/guides/how-many-sheets-of-plasterboard-do-i-need/) works through a 4 m × 3 m room that also has a window.

The last column is not always the other two added together. Bought for the walls and the ceiling at once, the boards are rounded up once, which comes to a board fewer in the 3 × 3 m room, the 3 × 3.5 m room, the 3 × 4 m room, the 3.5 × 4 m room and the 4 × 4 m room.

The boards are 1.2 m × 2.4 m, the planner’s generic example, in one layer. Another board size or a second layer changes the count: the [plasterboard calculator](https://buildbatch.co.uk/plasterboard-calculator/) takes the size and the layers of yours.

## What the table assumes

Each room is a rectangle 2.4 m high, with one door 0.762 m × 1.981 m.

- 1 door taken off the wall area; nothing is taken off the ceiling or the floor.
- Plasterboard is counted by area across the chosen surfaces, in 1.2 m × 2.4 m boards, 1 layer, with 10% extra. This is not a cutting layout; check awkward shapes before buying.
- Every quantity is rounded once, at the end, up to whole packs. Working uses unrounded figures.
- Plasterboard use generic example figures, not the figures of any product. Enter the figures from the tin or pack for a closer answer.
- Board size, layers and allowance (generic examples). Doors and windows entered for the room are taken off the wall area.

## How this table was made

It was worked out when this page was built, by the same room planner and formulas as the editable list: each row is one room sent through the planner. The room sizes are round examples. Product coverage, pack and allowance figures are the planner’s labelled generic examples, not figures for a product.

AI tools drafted the page and automated tests compare every cell with the planner. It has not been checked by a tradesperson or anyone outside the build. No price is shown or used.

## Before you use it

Measure your own room, its doors and its windows. Check the figures against the room, and follow each product's own instructions: they decide coverage, coats and preparation.

Built and checked with AI tools, not yet by a tradesperson or anyone outside the build. Estimates are arithmetic on your measurements and the figures shown with them: follow each product's own instructions.

**Make it your room.** The planner works from your own measurements and the figures on your tin, roll or pack, and gives the whole shopping list with its working.
