# Farrow & Ball wallpaper: roll size, pattern repeats and rolls for a room

6 min read · Updated 6 October 2026

A roll of Farrow & Ball wallpaper is 53 cm wide and 10 m long, and the pattern repeat runs from 16.1 cm for Bumble Bee to 140 cm for Feather Grass, by the maker’s own product advice sheets, read on 6 October 2026. For a 4 × 3 m room with walls 2.4 m high, BuildBatch’s count is 10 rolls for seven of the eight designs on this page and 14 for Atacama, whose offset match leaves room for two drops a roll, not three. With walls 2.7 m high, Helleborus and Silvergate take 14 as well.

## How this page was made

Kind of page: **Worked out**, not tested. The roll size, the pattern repeat and the match of each design are the maker's own figures, from its product advice sheets and product pages, read on 6 October 2026. The drops and rolls are BuildBatch's arithmetic using wallpaper formula 1.0.0.

It was drafted with AI tools, and the figures were checked against the maker's pages by a second AI tool. No tradesperson and no other person has checked it. It shows no price and no retailer link. [How BuildBatch compares products](https://buildbatch.co.uk/how-we-compare-products/) says what "worked out" means and what every page like this must show.

## What the maker says about each roll

These are eight designs whose sheet states the repeat and how the pattern matches. They are in the order of their pattern repeat, shortest first. It is not a ranking, and it is not the whole range.

Each sheet's table gives the pattern repeat, the roll width (53 cm) and the roll length (10 m), and the line above "Pattern Matching" gives the match. The sheets are listed on the maker's [product advice sheets page](https://www.farrow-ball.com/how-to-guide/product-advice-sheets). Each design's product page gives the same roll; where its repeat differs from the sheet's by a few millimetres, the cell says so, and this page uses the sheet's.

Two of the eight are offset matches. The sheets’ glossary says that in an offset match the next strip is shifted by the height shown, usually a half or a quarter of the repeat. Atacama’s 31.1 cm is half of its 62.3 cm repeat, and Helleborus’s 63.6 cm is half of the 127.2 cm on its product page. BuildBatch counts both as a half-drop match: it adds half a repeat to every drop.

Feather Grass is different again. The maker gives its drop, 330 cm, and says a roll gives three, so this page uses those two figures as they are and does not work the drop out from the 140 cm repeat.

## What the example room needs

The room is 4 m by 3 m. A 53 cm roll takes 8 drops on each long wall and 6 on each short one: 28 drops. Doors and windows are not taken off, which is how the planner counts wallpaper: the short lengths above and below them come from the same rolls. A drop is the wall’s height plus 10 cm for trimming, rounded up to whole repeats, plus half a repeat for the two offset designs. The maker’s sheets ask for 50 to 75 mm at the top and at the bottom, so the planner’s 10 cm is the lower end of that.

**What the example room needs with walls 2.4 m high**

| Design | Drop length | Drops from a roll | Rolls for 28 drops | Left on each roll |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Bumble Bee | 2.576 m | 3 | 10 rolls | 2.272 m |
| Brockhampton Star | 2.62 m | 3 | 10 rolls | 2.14 m |
| Lotus | 2.59 m | 3 | 10 rolls | 2.23 m |
| Wisteria | 2.69 m | 3 | 10 rolls | 1.93 m |
| Atacama | 3.427 m | 2 | 14 rolls | 3.147 m |
| Helleborus | 3.173 m | 3 | 10 rolls | 0.483 m |
| Silvergate | 2.616 m | 3 | 10 rolls | 2.152 m |
| Feather Grass | 3.3 mThe maker’s own drop and drops per roll | 3 | 10 rolls | 0.1 m |

**Sources.** The repeats and matches are the ones in the first table, from the maker’s sheets read on 6 October 2026. The drops and rolls are BuildBatch’s own arithmetic, run on 6 October 2026: wallpaper formula 1.0.0, described in [how estimates work](https://buildbatch.co.uk/how-estimates-work/). Feather Grass is the exception: its drop and its three drops a roll are the maker’s own.

What the table shows:

- **The length of the repeat does not decide the rolls by itself.** Bumble Bee, with the shortest repeat, and Silvergate, with one of the longest, both give three drops a roll: 2.576 m and 2.616 m each. Three drops of either fit in 10 m.
- **Atacama takes 14 rolls.** Five repeats are 3.115 m, and the half repeat makes each drop 3.427 m. Three of those would need more than 10 m, so a roll gives two and 3.147 m is left on each.
- **Helleborus is close to the edge.** The count gives three drops of 3.173 m with 0.483 m left on the roll, which is 10 rolls. The maker’s own guide to quantities allows two drops a roll for a large repeat in a 2.4 m room, and names Helleborus: at two a roll, 28 drops are 14 rolls. Where the two differ, order by the maker’s figure.
- **The maker says to add one more roll** to whatever you estimate, for trimming and mistakes. BuildBatch’s count does not add it.

## When the walls are higher

The same room with walls 2.7 m high: each drop starts from 2.8 m.

**What the example room needs with walls 2.7 m high**

| Design | Drop length | Drops from a roll | Rolls for 28 drops | Left on each roll |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Bumble Bee | 2.898 m | 3 | 10 rolls | 1.306 m |
| Brockhampton Star | 2.882 m | 3 | 10 rolls | 1.354 m |
| Lotus | 3.108 m | 3 | 10 rolls | 0.676 m |
| Wisteria | 3.228 m | 3 | 10 rolls | 0.316 m |
| Atacama | 3.427 m | 2 | 14 rolls | 3.147 m |
| Helleborus | 4.442 m | 2 | 14 rolls | 1.117 m |
| Silvergate | 3.924 m | 2 | 14 rolls | 2.152 m |
| Feather Grass | 3.3 mThe maker’s own drop and drops per roll | 3 | 10 rolls | 0.1 m |

**Sources.** The repeats and matches are the ones in the first table, from the maker’s sheets read on 6 October 2026. The drops and rolls are BuildBatch’s own arithmetic, run on 6 October 2026: wallpaper formula 1.0.0, described in [how estimates work](https://buildbatch.co.uk/how-estimates-work/). Feather Grass is the exception: its drop and its three drops a roll are the maker’s own.

Helleborus and Silvergate now need three repeats a drop and not two, so a roll gives two drops and the room takes 14 rolls of either. The four designs with repeats under 54 cm still give three drops a roll. In an old house with high ceilings, measure the height before you count on the 2.4 m figures.

## What else the maker’s pages say

Read on the same day, on the maker’s [wallpaper page](https://www.farrow-ball.com/wallpaper), its [guide to quantities](https://www.farrow-ball.com/how-to-guide/wallpaper/calculating-wallpaper-quantities) and the sheets above:

- **Paste the paper.** Every design is paste the paper except the three in its Heritage Papers collection, which are paste the wall.
- **Order every roll at once.** Rolls from a later production run can differ slightly in colour and pattern.
- **Hang the rolls in order.** The rolls are numbered and are to be hung one after the other.
- **Its rule of thumb for a 2.4 m room** is three drops a roll for a small repeat, four for a stripe and two for a large repeat. It calls this estimating.

[Wallpaper paste: how many rolls does a packet hang?](https://buildbatch.co.uk/guides/wallpaper-paste-how-many-rolls-does-a-packet-hang/) has the figures for paste.

## What this does not tell you

- **Your own walls.** A bay, a chimney breast or a sloping ceiling changes the drops. The count on this page is for four plain walls.
- **Where each pattern should start.** A large design is often centred on a wall or a chimney breast, which can cost a drop. The count does not plan that.
- **How the paper looks or hangs.** Nobody at BuildBatch has hung any of these papers.
- **The rest of the range.** Other designs have other repeats, and some sheets do not state the match.
- **A price.** No price is shown or compared.

## Do it with BuildBatch

Open the [room refresh planner](https://buildbatch.co.uk/room-refresh/), choose “Wallpaper them” and type your room. For the roll, type 53 cm and 10 m, then the repeat from the design’s sheet. Choose a straight match where the sheet says so, and a half-drop match where it gives an offset of half the repeat. The list counts the rolls for your walls and puts the paste, the lining paper and the tools beside them.

## Questions

**What size is a roll of Farrow & Ball wallpaper?**

53 cm wide and 10 m long, by the maker's product advice sheets and product pages, read on 6 October 2026. That is 5 cm shorter than the 10.05 m roll BuildBatch uses as its example, so type 10 in the planner.

**How many rolls of Farrow & Ball wallpaper does a 4 × 3 m room need?**

With walls 2.4 m high the room takes 28 drops. BuildBatch's count is 10 rolls for seven of the eight designs on this page and 14 for Atacama. The maker's own rule of thumb allows two drops a roll for a large repeat such as Helleborus, which would make 14 rolls, and it says to add one more roll to whatever you estimate.

**Does a bigger pattern repeat always mean more rolls?**

No. With walls 2.4 m high, Silvergate's 130.8 cm repeat and Bumble Bee's 16.1 cm repeat both give three drops from a 10 m roll. The count changes when a third drop no longer fits: Atacama's offset match makes each drop 3.427 m, so a roll gives two.

**Want the sum done for you?** It works from your own measurements and product figures, and shows its working.
